What is a Family Law Specialist?

The Texas Board of Legal Specialization was created by the Supreme Court of Texas and the Board members are appointed by the President of the State Bar of Texas. The Board, in turn, administers the program through which an attorney may demonstrate his/her special competence in a particular area of law practice. 

According to the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, approximately 663 attorneys are currently board certified in the area of family law.

The attorney must meet the following general requirements for Board Certification in Family Law:

1. Licensed to practice law for at least 5 years.
2. Practiced family law for at least 3 years.
3. Devoted a minimum of 35% of one's law practice to family law.
4. Handled a wide variety of family law matters to demonstrate experience and involvement.
5. Attended family law continuing legal education seminars regularly to keep their legal training up to date.
6. Evaluated by fellow lawyers and judges.
7. Passed a day-long written examination.
8. A lawyer who is Board Certified in Family Law must have prepared for and participated in the contested trial of cases involving such matters as divorce, property division, child custody, child support, adoption, paternity or other matrimonial matters.
